How Baguame Calculates Results
Baguame calculates results by code, from the date and the data you enter, following classical rules. The AI doesn't calculate them: it receives the results and interprets them.

Zi Bai Stars follows the trigram method described by Lilian Too.
Shared rules
- The Feng Shui year starts at Li Chun, around February 4. It doesn't start on January 1 or at Chinese New Year.
- Feng Shui months follow the 12 solar terms.
- Periods last 20 years, counted from 1864. Period 9 is 2024–2043.
- Stars move along the standard Lo Shu path.
The Annual Afflictions and Flying Stars pages open on the calendar year by default. In January, before Li Chun, check the previous year.
Gua number
The Gua number uses the birth year and the gender at birth. Births before Li Chun count toward the previous year.
- Add the digits of the last two digits of the year until one digit remains.
- Apply the formula:
| Born before 2000 | Born from 2000 | |
|---|---|---|
| Men | 10 − sum | 9 − sum |
| Women | 5 + sum | 6 + sum |
Reduce the result to one digit. A result of 5 becomes 2 for men and 8 for women.
Flying Stars
Annual and month stars use the Li Chun and solar term boundaries. Day and hour star numbers come from lunar-javascript. On the chart, stars always fly forward.
House natal chart
The Period star goes in the center and flies forward. The stars in the facing and sitting palaces then fly forward or backward, by the classical odd and even rule for the 24 Mountains. A 5 takes its direction from the period number.
Baguame doesn't use replacement stars (Ti Gua) or special chart formations.
Annual Afflictions
- Tai Sui: the year's Earthly Branch, in its 15° mountain
- Year Breaker: directly opposite Tai Sui
- Three Killings: a 90° zone set by the branch group
| Branch group | Three Killings |
|---|---|
| Shen, Zi, Chen | South |
| Yin, Wu, Xu | North |
| Si, You, Chou | East |
| Hai, Mao, Wei | West |
- Five Yellow: the position of star 5 in the annual chart. It can fall in the center.
BaZi
- Year and month pillars change at the exact moment of Li Chun and of each solar term.
- Late Zi hour (23:00–24:00): the day pillar stays on the current day, and the hour stem follows the next day.
- True solar time is on by default when a birth time is given. It applies the equation of time, and also longitude and DST when the location is known. You can turn off the location correction.
- Element percentages are approximate, from the formula (HS + HHS − DM) × Month. Values vary between schools.
Zi Wei Dou Shu
The chart uses iztro, with the same true solar time correction as BaZi, so that both charts of a person agree.
Daily Almanac
The activities, day officer, Na Yin, and directions come from lunar-javascript. The day quality is Baguame's own score, from these checks:
- The day officer isn't Po or Wei.
- The lunar mansion is lucky.
- The day spirit is lucky.
- Lucky spirits are at least as many as unlucky ones.
Why results can differ from other sites
- A different start of the year: Li Chun or Chinese New Year
- True solar time on or off, which can change the hour pillar
- Late Zi hour handling, which can change the day pillar
- A different north, facing direction, or center of the home
- Replacement stars in natal charts
- A 45° or 90° Three Killings zone
- Different element strength formulas in BaZi
Feng Shui and Chinese astrology are traditions with several schools. Baguame is an educational and informational service, and its results describe traditional interpretations.
