Ba Zhai — one of the oldest and most precise systems of classical Feng Shui. Use your date of birth and gender, and discover how every corner of your home either supports or drains your personal energy.
Ba Zhai (八宅, "Eight Mansions") is a branch of classical Feng Shui dating back to the Tang Dynasty. It divides every dwelling into eight directional sectors, each carrying a specific energetic quality — either supportive or challenging — unique to the person living there.
The system is built on two pillars: your personal Gua number — derived from your birth year and gender — and the precise compass orientation of your home. When these two align, the results are practical and measurable.
☯️ Personal trigram (Gua)
Calculated from birth year and gender. Determines your personal energy group — East or West — and your four auspicious and four inauspicious directions.
Zone overlay
Your personal directions are overlaid on the house map. Where they align — auspicious person zones meeting auspicious house zones — those are your power positions.
House orientation (Zhai Gua)
Calculated from birth year and gender. Determines your personal energy group — East or West — and your four auspicious and four inauspicious directions.
Practical application
Bedroom placement, desk orientation, stove direction, door alignment — Ba Zhai turns abstract theory into specific, actionable recommendations.
Your Gua Number
The Gua number is your energetic fingerprint within the Ba Zhai system. It is derived mathematically from your year of birth and gender, placing you in one of nine trigrams — each belonging to either the East Life Group or the West Life Group.

How the Gua number is calculated
A simple two-step formula — but with three adjustments most calculators get wrong.
1. Sum digits
Take the last two digits of your birth year and add them together. If the result is two digits, add again until you get a single number. For example: 1985 → 8+5 = 13 → 1+3 = 4
2. Male / Female
The formula differs by gender. Men subtract the result from 10 (born after 2000 — from 9). Women add 5 to the result (born after 2000 — add 6). This gender split is non-negotiable in classical Ba Zhai — it reflects the yin/yang polarity of the trigram system.
3. Result: Gua 1–9
Your final number is your Gua. If the result is 5 — men become Gua 2, women become Gua 8. There is no Gua 5 in the Eight Mansions system. This is the most common point of confusion in manual calculation.
Knowing your Gua number is the foundation of any Ba Zhai analysis. Without it, you cannot determine your four auspicious directions, your life group, or how your personal energy aligns with the space you live in. Everything in the Eight Mansions system starts here.
You may have noticed there is no Gua 5 in the grid above. This is intentional — in classical Ba Zhai, the number 5 has no trigram of its own. Men born with a calculated result of 5 are reassigned to Gua 2 (Kun), and women to Gua 8 (Gen). This is one of the most common sources of error in manual calculation — along with the pre/post-2000 correction and the Li Chun solar boundary.
To make sure your Gua number is correct, use the Baguame calculator — it applies all three adjustments automatically.
Once your Gua number is known, each compass direction in your home receives a specific quality. Four zones work in your favor — use them for sleeping, working, and your main entrance. Four zones work against you — minimize activity there or redirect their energy.

East vs West Group
Every person and every house belongs to one of two groups. When they match — energy flows. When they conflict — remedies are needed.
West Group
Gua 2, 6, 7, 8 Your auspicious directions are West, Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast. Houses facing these directions work in your favour. The trigrams Dui, Qian, Kun, Gen, and the neutral centre belong to your group.
East Group
Gua 1, 3, 4, 9 Your auspicious directions are North, East, South, and Southeast. Houses facing these directions support your energy naturally. The trigrams Kan, Zhen, Xun, and Li belong to your group.

Ba Zhai is a classical Chinese system based on compass directions and mathematical calculation. Western Feng Shui (BTB) aligns the Bagua to the front door regardless of compass orientation. They are fundamentally different systems — Ba Zhai requires an actual compass reading to work correctly.
Completely accurate — provided the correct birth year is used. The most common errors are ignoring the Li Chun solar boundary (around February 4th) and the pre/post-2000 formula adjustment. Baguame applies both automatically.
If you were born before Li Chun (approximately February 4th), you use the previous year for your Gua calculation. For example, someone born on January 20th, 1990 calculates their Gua using 1989. Baguame prompts you for this automatically.
Yes. Most recommendations involve furniture placement and sleeping direction — not structural changes. Even in a rental, optimizing your bed orientation and desk position can make a meaningful difference.
This is common. When a person and their house belong to different groups, the priority is usually given to the most-used spaces — bedroom and main working area. Specific remedies can also be applied to reduce the conflict.
Yes, and this is the normal situation for families. Baguame lets you calculate every resident's Gua and compare their zone overlays to find the best shared positions — particularly for the master bedroom and main living areas.
The personal Gua number never changes — it is fixed from birth. However, combining Ba Zhai with the annual Flying Stars adds a time dimension that updates each year. Baguame supports both systems simultaneously.
Not for the calculation itself. But to apply the results to your home, you need to know the compass orientation of your main entrance. A basic phone compass app is sufficient for most residential applications.
It means that zone is being "wasted" on a low-activity space. In classical practice, the remedy is either to increase activity in an adjacent auspicious zone or to apply specific enhancements. The AI analysis in Baguame addresses exactly this scenario.
Ba Zhai is a static system — your personal directions never change. Flying Stars is a dynamic system where energy patterns shift by year, month, and hour. Used together, they give a complete picture: Ba Zhai provides the permanent personal map, Flying Stars adds the temporal layer.
