Measurements & Mapping

How to take a reliable compass reading, establish a home's facing direction, and lay the Bagua map or the Lo Shu grid over a floor plan.

Every reading — a Ba Zi chart, a Flying Stars analysis, a simple Kua number calculation — depends on one crucial input: accurate spatial data. If that input is wrong, every conclusion built on top of it is wrong too, no matter how sophisticated the method. That is why measurement is the first practical step of any feng shui work, and why this section treats it with the seriousness it deserves.

The compass reading

Taking a proper reading is the commonest point of confusion for beginners. You will learn where to stand for it, why metal and electronics have to be kept away, and how to steady a reading that keeps flickering as the phone rotates. Two dedicated guides cover the practical fixes on Android and on iOS.

From there the section moves up a level, to the 24 Mountains: the ring of fifteen-degree sectors a Luopan is divided into, how its names are built, and how a facing direction is placed on it — including the awkward case where the reading falls exactly between two mountains.

The facing direction and the floor plan

The facing direction of a building is the most important single piece of information in most feng shui systems, and the guide to a home's natal chart parameters covers how to establish it, together with the construction period and the sitting direction that a Flying Stars chart needs.

The other half of the work is preparing the floor plan. The full guide to the Bagua map explains both ways of laying it out — aligned to the compass, or aligned to the entrance — how to find the centre point of a space, and what to do when a home is not a neat rectangle.

What the measurements feed

The figures you take here go straight into the calculators: the Kua number for personal directions, the Flying Stars chart for the building, the 24 Mountains for the compass work and the Bagua map for the layout. Get them right once and every other tool becomes usable.
