Wu Gui (五鬼) Feng Shui: The Five Ghosts Direction and Its Remedies
There is a particular kind of bad luck that never announces itself: the partner who has been planning to leave, the employee who has been taking from the till, the friend who has been repeating your words to someone else. In the Ba Zhai (Eight Mansions) system this is the domain of Wu Gui — the "Five Ghosts" — and it is the second-most-severe of your four inauspicious directions.
What Is Wu Gui (五鬼)?
Wu Gui (五鬼) means "Five Ghosts" — five unseen influences, which is exactly how its effects present themselves. It is governed by the Lian Zhen (廉贞) star and belongs to the Fire element. Lian Zhen is the fire of conflict and intensity: it is the star behind quarrels, rash decisions, scandals and legal trouble, and when it lands in a bad position, that heat goes where you cannot see it.
Fire also explains the "ghostly" quality of the direction. Fire spreads, leaps gaps, and destroys what it was meant to warm. So Wu Gui is read as trouble that arrives from a distance you did not think was in range: betrayal by someone close, robbery, deception, disputes that come out of nowhere, and health problems that flare rather than creep.
What Wu Gui Affects
- Betrayal and deception. Being misled by someone trusted — in business, in family, in friendship.
- Theft and robbery. Losses that involve someone else's hand: burglary, embezzlement, being cheated in a deal.
- Quarrels and scandals. Arguments that become public, reputations damaged by rumour, disputes that attract attention.
- Legal trouble. Wu Gui is one of the two directions classically linked to litigation and official trouble; Liu Sha brings the paperwork, Wu Gui brings the conflict behind it.
- Hot temper and rash decisions. People who sleep or work in Wu Gui report a shorter fuse — and short fuses cause expensive mistakes.
- Sudden illness and accidents. Flare-ups rather than slow declines: fevers, inflammations, injuries with an element of surprise.
- Instability in the household. Friction that has no single cause and reappears whatever you do.
How to Find Your Wu Gui Direction
Your Wu Gui direction is fixed by your Ming Gua (Kua) number for life. Like the other three inauspicious directions it always falls on a direction belonging to the opposite group: East group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) meets its four bad directions on West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast; West group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8) on North, East, South and Southeast.

If you don't know your Kua number yet, calculate it with our free online calculator.
Wu Gui falls in this direction:
- Kua 1: Northeast
- Kua 2: Southeast
- Kua 3: Northwest
- Kua 4: Southwest
- Kua 6: East
- Kua 7: South
- Kua 8: North
- Kua 9: West
A compass bearing on its own is not an answer: the direction matters only where a room of your own home occupies it. The Ba Zhai calculator maps the eight directions onto your floor plan and shows which rooms fall in Wu Gui.
How to Neutralise Wu Gui
The rule is unchanged — do not activate the sector, and drain its element — but the element is not the one people expect. Wu Gui is Fire, and Fire produces Earth in the Five Elements cycle. So the cure is Earth: pottery, ceramics, stone, crystals, and earthy tones. Earth absorbs the heat and turns it into something inert.
- Place Earth in the sector. A ceramic bowl, a stone object, an earthenware vase, a crystal cluster, terracotta or beige finishes. Keep it modest and well-kept; the point is absorption, not decoration.
- Never add Fire. Red and orange palettes, candles, open flames, strong warm lighting, fireplaces and a wall of electronics all feed the energy you are trying to reduce. In a Wu Gui sector, a "cosy" red room is an accelerant.
- Do not use Metal as the cure here. This is the most common mistake, and it comes from mixing up directions: Metal is the remedy for Huo Hai, but in a Fire sector Metal only gets melted. Match the element to the direction, not to habit.
- Keep activity low. Storage, a utility corner or a plain bathroom are acceptable. Avoid putting the desk you argue from, the bed you sleep in, or the door everyone uses in this sector.
- Keep the main door and the stove out of it if you can. If the front door faces Wu Gui, temper it with Earth between the door and the interior and keep the entrance bright and orderly. If the stove sits in the sector, avoid red finishes nearby and keep the area scrupulously clean.
- Cool the conversations. Since Wu Gui is a Fire direction, the practical countermeasure is behavioural as much as spatial: hold negotiations, family discussions and difficult phone calls elsewhere.
Where Wu Gui Sits Among the Four Inauspicious Directions
- Huo Hai (祸害) — the mildest: minor accidents, illness, gossip, obstruction.
- Liu Sha (六煞) — conflict and disputes: legal trouble, emotional volatility, trouble from words.
- Wu Gui (五鬼) — betrayal, theft and deception: trouble from behind your back.
- Jue Ming (绝命) — the most severe: ruin, serious illness, grave energy.
Wu Gui and Liu Sha are cousins — both produce trouble with other people — but they differ in where it comes from. Liu Sha's problems are visible from the start and get worse; Wu Gui's are invisible until they land.
Conclusion
Wu Gui is the direction of things that were done without your knowledge: the money that went, the ally who was not one, the quarrel that arrived fully formed. It cannot be reasoned with, and it is fixed for life by your Kua number. What can be changed is your exposure — Earth in the sector, Fire out of it, and the most important transactions of your life conducted somewhere else in the house.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Wu Gui mean in Feng Shui?
Wu Gui (五鬼) means "Five Ghosts" and is the third-most-severe of the four inauspicious directions in the Ba Zhai system. Governed by the Lian Zhen (廉贞) star and the Fire element, it is associated with betrayal, theft, deception, quarrels, scandals, legal conflict and sudden illness or accidents.
How do I find my Wu Gui direction?
From your Kua number: Kua 1 Northeast, Kua 2 Southeast, Kua 3 Northwest, Kua 4 Southwest, Kua 6 East, Kua 7 South, Kua 8 North, Kua 9 West. The Kua calculator gives you the number and the Ba Zhai calculator shows which rooms fall in the sector.
What is the cure for Wu Gui?
Earth. Wu Gui is Fire, and Fire produces Earth, so Earth drains it: ceramics, pottery, stone, crystals and earthy or terracotta tones. Avoid adding Fire, which strengthens the sector, and avoid Metal, which is the cure for Huo Hai but is simply melted by Fire here.
Is Wu Gui dangerous?
In the classical texts it is one of the two most serious of the inauspicious directions, but its effects are contextual rather than automatic: it matters most where you sleep, work and sign agreements. A Wu Gui sector used for storage or a bathroom, kept plain and free of Fire, is a non-event. The same sector used as a study where you manage money is a different story.
Which rooms should never be in Wu Gui?
Does Wu Gui change every year?
No — it is fixed for life by your birth data. The energies that move are the annual ones: the annual afflictions and the yearly Flying Stars. Where a fixed Wu Gui sector coincides with an annual affliction, that corner is the one to treat first.
