Jue Ming (绝命) Feng Shui: The Total Loss Direction and Its Remedies

Every Ba Zhai chart contains one direction that the classical texts treat with real seriousness, and Jue Ming is it. The name is unflinching — 绝命 can be read as "severed life," "cut off" — and among the eight energies of the Eight Mansions system it is the one that practitioners look at first when something in a house has gone badly and repeatedly wrong.

What Is Jue Ming (绝命)?

Jue Ming (绝命) is usually translated as "Total Loss" or "Life Severed." It is governed by the Po Jun (破军) star — literally "Broken Army," the star of destruction and upheaval — and belongs to the Metal element. Where Wu Qu Metal, the star of Yan Nian, is loyal and enduring, Po Jun Metal is the edge that cuts: decisive, unsparing, and final.

That is how the direction reads. Not slow attrition, not conflict, not betrayal — ending. Financial ruin, the loss of the thing you could least afford to lose, serious illness, accidents with lasting consequences. In traditional language it is the "grave direction," and the old advice was blunt: a house whose main door or bed faces the occupant's Jue Ming was a house to be corrected, not decorated.

What Jue Ming Affects

  • Total loss. The failure of a business, an investment wiped out, a house lost, the collapse of something that was everything.
  • Severe illness and injury. Not the recurring cold of Huo Hai, but serious conditions and accidents with permanent consequences.
  • Upheaval. Sudden reversals: a marriage ending, a career cut short, a move that was not chosen.
  • Grave and grief energy. Losses that bring mourning, and a heaviness in the house that everyone feels and nobody names.
  • The absence of recourse. Po Jun destroys rather than adjusts: the losses attributed to Jue Ming tend to be ones you cannot argue with afterwards.
  • Pressure on the family line. In the older readings Jue Ming was linked to the health and continuity of the household itself, which is why it was never treated as an inconvenience.

How to Find Your Jue Ming Direction

Jue Ming is fixed for life by your Ming Gua (Kua) number. As with the other three inauspicious directions, it always falls on one of the four directions of the opposite group: East group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) finds its four bad directions on West, Northwest, Southwest and Northeast; West group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8) on North, East, South and Southeast.

Jue Ming falls in this direction:

  • Kua 1: Southwest
  • Kua 2: North
  • Kua 3: West
  • Kua 4: Northeast
  • Kua 6: South
  • Kua 7: East
  • Kua 8: Southeast
  • Kua 9: Northwest

The direction is only the beginning of the answer: what matters is whether your bedroom, your front door, your stove or your desk occupies that sector of your home. A Ba Zhai calculator that overlays the eight directions on your floor plan is what turns the table above into a decision about which room to use differently.

How to Neutralise Jue Ming

The principle is the usual one — do not activate the sector, and drain its element — and for Jue Ming the element to drain is Metal, which in the Five Elements cycle produces Water. So the cure is Water, used deliberately and kept under control.

  • Use Water to dissolve the Metal. A small, clean water feature, an aquarium with healthy fish, or dark blue and black finishes in the sector draw the Metal energy out of it. This is the one inauspicious direction where Water — normally avoided near sleeping and working areas — is the classical remedy.
  • Do not add Metal. This is where the remedies for the four bad directions diverge, and mixing them up is the most common error: Metal is the cure for Huo Hai, but here it reinforces the sector. No metal wind chimes, no brass, no steel shelving in Jue Ming.
  • Give the sector to the bathroom or the storage room. A toilet or bathroom in Jue Ming is traditionally regarded as acceptable, even welcome: water flushes the sector continuously, and nobody spends the day there. What the sector must not hold is the bed, the main door, the kitchen stove, or the desk at which you manage money.
  • Turn bodies away from the direction. If you must sleep, sit or work in the sector, do not face the Jue Ming direction while you do it. Face Sheng Qi to work, Tian Yi to recover, Yan Nian to sleep.
  • Keep it quiet, clean and unglamorous. No celebrations, no important conversations, no large purchases and no rebuilding of your life in this corner. Treat it as the house's service area.
  • Take a serious case seriously. If your front door or your bed faces Jue Ming and the household has had a run of serious losses, the traditional advice is not a decorative fix but a proper review of the property — with Flying Stars and the annual afflictions read alongside the personal chart.

Where Jue Ming Sits Among the Four Inauspicious Directions

  1. Huo Hai (祸害) — the mildest: minor accidents, illness, gossip, obstruction.
  2. Liu Sha (六煞) — conflict: disputes, legal trouble, emotional instability.
  3. Wu Gui (五鬼) — betrayal and theft, trouble from behind your back.
  4. Jue Ming (绝命) — the most severe: total loss, serious illness, upheaval, grave energy.

Severity is a matter of degree, not of certainty. A Jue Ming sector used for storage, kept dark and quiet, with a water feature in it, is a controlled weakness. The same sector holding the master bed, with the desk facing it, is the configuration the classical texts warn about.

Conclusion

Jue Ming is the direction that makes Feng Shui practitioners careful, and it is the reason the Eight Mansions system is worth knowing before you buy a house rather than after. Its remedy is unusually specific — Water to drain the Metal, the sector kept unglamorous and out of the way — and its value is preventative: knowing where it is costs nothing, and putting the important parts of your life somewhere else costs nothing either.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Jue Ming mean in Feng Shui?

Jue Ming (绝命) means "Total Loss" or "Life Severed" and is the most severe of the four inauspicious directions in the Ba Zhai system. Governed by the Po Jun (破军) star and the Metal element, it is associated with ruin, serious illness, grave losses and upheaval.

How do I find my Jue Ming direction?

From your Kua number: Kua 1 Southwest, Kua 2 North, Kua 3 West, Kua 4 Northeast, Kua 6 South, Kua 7 East, Kua 8 Southeast, Kua 9 Northwest. The Kua calculator gives you the number and the Ba Zhai calculator places the direction on your floor plan.

What is the cure for Jue Ming?

Water. Jue Ming is Metal, and Metal produces Water in the Five Elements cycle, so Water drains it: a small water feature, an aquarium, or dark blue and black finishes in the sector. Unlike Huo Hai, where Metal is the remedy, here Metal must be kept out, because it strengthens the sector instead of tempering it.

Is Jue Ming dangerous for a bedroom?

It is the configuration the classical texts advise most strongly against — particularly if the bed head points into the Jue Ming direction, since a third of your life is spent in it. If the bedroom cannot be moved, point the bed head toward Yan Nian or Tian Yi, keep the room free of Metal, and place a small water element instead.

Can a bathroom be in the Jue Ming sector?

Yes, and in traditional practice it is one of the better uses: water drains the sector continuously and the room is used in short bursts rather than lived in. What you want to avoid is the master bedroom, the main entrance, the kitchen stove or the desk where you handle money.

Does Jue Ming change from year to year?

No — it is fixed for life by your Kua number, calculated from your birth year and gender. What changes annually are the annual afflictions and the yearly Flying Stars. When a fixed Jue Ming sector also receives an annual affliction, that overlap is the part of the house to deal with first.
