The Five Elements (Wu Xing) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — are the fundamental pillars of energy balance in Chinese metaphysics. Far more than a simple list of materials, they form a complete system of correspondences and interactions that a practitioner uses to evaluate a space, a person or a moment in time. Understanding this system is what makes the rest of the knowledge base legible.

The five, one by one

Each element has its own article here, and each follows the same shape: the correspondences it carries — season, direction, colour, organ, temperament — the way it behaves in personality and in health, how it is expressed in home design, and the relationships it forms with the other four. Wood (木) is growth and expansion; Fire (火) is heat, visibility and transformation; Earth (土) is stability, nourishment and the centre; Metal (金) is structure, clarity and contraction; Water (水) is depth, movement and rest.

Generations and controls

The elements are read as a cycle, not as a chart. In the generating cycle each one produces the next — Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood. In the controlling cycle each one restrains another at a distance, which is what keeps a single element from running away with a reading.

Both cycles are used in the same direction: to decide whether a room, or a chart, holds enough of an element, too much of it, or an excess that is quietly damaging the element next to it. A remedy is almost always one of these relationships applied deliberately.

Where the elements are used

The same five run through every other section of the knowledge base — the Eight Trigrams, the Ten Heavenly Stems and the Twelve Earthly Branches, the nine stars of Flying Stars, and the personal directions of the Kua number. Learning them properly here is what makes those sections readable.
