Limits and Timing in Zi Wei Dou Shu: The Ten-Year and Annual Periods
A Purple Star chart is fixed at birth and never changes: the stars keep their palaces for life. What changes is which palaces are active at a given time. The system reads this through a set of overlapping periods, the largest of which is ten years long, and the whole art of timing in Purple Star Astrology is the art of laying those periods over the unchanging chart.
The ten-year limits
The twelve palaces of the birth chart double as the twelve ten-year limits (大限, dàxiàn). Each palace governs one decade of life in turn, beginning with the period set on the Life palace, so that where a person stands in the chart also says which sphere of life is most active for them at that age.
Two rules decide how the sequence runs.
- Where it begins. The first ten-year limit starts at an age taken from the chart's Five Elements Bureau: Water Two begins the reckoning at two, Wood Three at three, Metal Four at four, Earth Five at five and Fire Six at six, in the common reckoning. The Life palace governs that first period.
- Which way it runs. The limits proceed either with the Earthly Branches or against them, decided by the polarity of the birth year together with gender: yang-year men and yin-year women run forward, yin-year men and yang-year women run backward. The chart's own structure, not a choice, fixes the direction.
A limit is read by taking the stars of its palace and the Four Transformations attached to them and asking what that decade emphasises. A palace whose natal star carries 化忌, for example, tends to make its decade one of pressure in that sphere, while one carrying 化祿 makes it one of flow.
The annual and smaller periods
Under the ten-year layer sit shorter cycles that move every year.
The annual period (流年, liúnián) is read from the branch of the current year, which becomes the year's Life palace in the chart. The stem of the year then supplies the annual transformations — its own four points of wealth, power, fame and obstruction — laid over the natal ones. This is why a year can be read as difficult in a sphere the birth chart calls easy: the annual layer has moved a 化忌 into it.
The minor limit (小限, xiǎoxiàn) is a second, older annual marker that advances one palace per year of age, starting from the birth-year branch. Where it agrees with the annual palace, a reading gains confidence; where it disagrees, the two are weighed and the disagreement is reported rather than smoothed over.
Monthly and daily periods exist below the annual one, counted from the month and day in the same manner, and the Flying Star school in particular makes use of them for fine timing.
Reading the layers together
The birth chart is the map and the periods are the journey across it. The natal twelve palaces say what a life contains; the ten-year limit says which part of that map a decade travels; the annual period says where the journey stands this year.
A reading that used only one layer would overstate it. A hard natal star is a permanent tendency, not a prediction of a single year; a single difficult annual period does not redraw the chart. The classical practice is to read the layers in order — natal, then the limit, then the year — and to let each qualify the one below.
Because every layer above the birth chart is driven by the calendar, the current values are best taken from a tool rather than copied into text. The Zi Wei Dou Shu calculator produces the birth chart and the periods that overlay it; the mechanism is what this article describes, and the reading depends on the chart it is applied to.
Does everyone start their first ten-year limit at the same age?
No. The starting age comes from the chart's Five Elements Bureau, so it is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 depending on the element. From that start the twelve limits cover the following hundred and twenty years.
Why do some charts run forward and others backward?
The direction is fixed by the polarity of the birth year and gender: yang-year men and yin-year women run with the branches, their opposites run against them. It is a standing rule of the system, not a choice made in the reading.
What is the difference between the annual period and the minor limit?
They are two different annual markers. The annual period is set from the year's Earthly Branch and comes with the year's Four Transformations; the minor limit advances one palace for each year of age from the birth-year branch. Read together they confirm or qualify each other.
Can timing in Purple Star Astrology be applied to a house or a business?
The system is built for a person, and its periods are counted from a birth. Practitioners sometimes read a business or an organisation from the birth of its founder or its founding date, but that is an extension of the personal method, not a separate system. For the timing of places and buildings, the time and cycles of feng shui are the tools.
