Tiantong (天同) — The Star of Ease and Good Fortune

天同 Tiantong, the "heavenly likeness", is the fifth star of the Ziwei group and the classical fortune star (福星) of Purple Star Astrology. It is counted among the 南斗 Southern Dipper stars and summarised as 化氣為福 — its transforming quality is blessing. Where Wuqu earns, Tiantong enjoys: the star is read for ease, goodwill, comfort, and the kind of person others are glad to have around.

The character of the star

Tiantong is Water, and the tradition reads it as the softest of the major stars. Its holder is described as mild, adaptable, humane and disinclined to conflict — the child of the system's imagery, fortunate and well liked, but not naturally driven. The texts treat it as auspicious in the plain sense: a chart with Tiantong has relief in it, a place where things come more easily than they might.

The same reading carries the classical warning. Water follows the ground it is on, and a star of ease that is over-supported reads as 懶 — laziness, drift, and the comfortable person who never quite commits. Practitioners therefore look for what disciplines the star: a well-placed Wuqu or Qisha in the same chart, a transformation of Power, or a strong career palace structure. Tiantong without tension is a pleasant chart and, in the tradition's judgement, an unproductive one. The other classical note is sensitivity — the star is read for sentiment, for tears, and for a person who is hurt more easily than they show.

Yang Water is the broad river rather than the still pool: capable of force, but inclined to take the path of least resistance. The classical sources note that Tiantong is read best where it is given a channel to run in, and worst where its ease is left without any structure to move through.

In the palaces

Life palace. A gentle, sociable, well-liked character with an easy manner and a genuine taste for pleasure. Read positively, it is the placement of a fortunate life; read with the classical caution, of a person who needs to be pushed.

Wealth palace. Money that arrives without a fight and is spent without regret — income from relationships, comfort, or work that does not feel like work. The texts note the risk of the star here: resources treated as inexhaustible.

Career palace. Work that involves people, service, comfort or culture — hospitality, counselling, the arts, education — rather than competition. Classical sources add that Tiantong is well matched to a career that provides security rather than one that rewards aggression.

Spouse palace. One of the more favourable placements for a partnership: a kind, accommodating partner and a relationship that is comfortable rather than dramatic. The corresponding caution is about drift — a marriage that neither party works at.

Health palace. Traditionally the bladder and kidneys, and the complaints the tradition associates with Water and with indulgence: digestion, fluids, and the effects of a life lived pleasantly.

In the Children palace the star reads as affectionate children and as a warm relation with them. In Fortune palace — the seat of inner life — Tiantong is read at its best, as contentment and an untroubled inner world. In Siblings it reads as easy relations with peers, and in Travel as comfortable journeys and good luck abroad.

With other stars

  • Tiantong and Taiyin — ease joined to refinement: a soft, cultured, aesthetic combination, and one of the classical pairings for a life of comfort and sensibility.
  • Tiantong and Jumen — ease against speech. The 南斗 pair most often read as a chart where comfort and criticism pull against each other; the classical texts give it their own name and their own warnings about quarrels at home.
  • Tiantong and Tianliang — the fortunate child with the elder: protection, benevolence and, in the classical reading, an easy life that is still given direction.
  • Tiantong and Tianji — ease joined to cleverness: a pleasant wit, and the classical caution about talent without application.

The transformation of Power, wherever it falls, matters to a Tiantong chart more than to most, because it supplies the drive the star lacks; and 火星 Huoxing or 鈴星 Lingxing on Tiantong is read by some lines as a spur rather than a harm — the classical "激發" reading, in which pressure on the fortune star produces ambition it would not otherwise have.

Transformations

In the common reckoning Tiantong carries 化祿 Wealth under 丙 Bǐng, 化權 Power under 丁 Dīng, and 化忌 Obstruction under 庚 Gēng. The pattern is telling: the star of ease takes either flow or control, which is precisely what the classical reading asks of it. Where Tiantong takes 化權 it is given the drive that its own nature lacks; where it takes 化忌, the texts read the opposite — comfort becoming complacency, and a good-natured chart that meets difficulty it is poorly equipped to press through.

Is Tiantong the best star to have?

It is the star the tradition reads as 福, "blessing", and it does mark ease, goodwill and an untroubled inner life. The classical literature is equally clear that ease without structure becomes drift, so a Tiantong chart is read as fortunate and is measured by what gives it direction.

Why do practitioners look for a difficult star beside it?

Because the star supplies comfort rather than drive. Its most quoted readings involve the fortune star being pushed — by a transformation of Power, by a firm star in a related palace, or by one of the 煞 stars. That pressure is read as making the ease productive rather than as spoiling it.

Does Tiantong in the Spouse palace mean a happy marriage?

It is one of the kinder placements for partnership: a good-natured partner and a comfortable relation. The texts note the risk of drift rather than conflict — a marriage that is pleasant and unattended. The palace's other stars and transformations decide the rest.
