Tianfu (天府) — The Treasury Star of Purple Star Astrology
天府 Tianfu, the "heavenly storehouse", is the leader of the second group of the fourteen major stars and the first star of the 南斗 Southern Dipper. Its place in the chart is set from Ziwei by a standing reflection rule, and the eight stars of its group then fall into position around it. The name is its reading: a treasury is where things are kept, counted and protected, and Tianfu is the star of stability, management and the quiet competence of holding resources rather than seeking them.
The character of the star
The classical summary is 化氣為令, "its transforming quality is command", and the command here is administrative. Tianfu is read as the capable steward: reliable, even-tempered, prudent, and skilled at keeping something running. Where Ziwei provides authority and Wuqu earns, Tianfu keeps — the star of the manager, the administrator, the custodian of other people's resources, and the person a household or an institution relies on without saying so.
Its virtue is steadiness, and its limitation is the same steadiness. The treasury does not move. Classical practice reads Tianfu for conservatism, for caution carried to slowness, and for a person who is more comfortable maintaining a system than challenging it. The star is also read for good fortune in the plain sense — a chart with a well-placed Tianfu tends to have a floor under it — which is why the texts treat it as auspicious without ever calling it exciting. Tianfu is not one of the four stars that take the 化忌 Transformation of Obstruction in the common reckoning, and the tradition reads that as part of its character: the treasury is the one seat the year's friction does not attach to directly.
Element, polarity and place
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Element and polarity | 戊土 Yang Earth |
| Group | Tianfu group — leader; first of the 南斗 Southern Dipper stars |
| Classical quality | 化氣為令, command / authority |
| Function in the chart | The treasury: stability, management, conservation, and the holding of resources |
Yang Earth is the mountain rather than the garden soil — settled, unmoving and substantial — and it suits a star whose whole business is to keep what exists. Tianfu is read well in the earth branches that support its element and in the metal branches that its earth produces; practitioners judge it in its seat as they do every star, and note that a treasury in unstable ground is read for resources that are held but not enjoyed.
In the palaces
Life palace. A dependable, even-tempered, managerial character — someone others rely on, who dislikes disorder and prefers to consolidate. The classical caution is about caution itself: a person who keeps what they have and does not venture.
Wealth palace. The star's own seat, and the classical placement for wealth that is stored rather than displayed. Tianfu in the Wealth palace is read for financial security, careful management and, in the older texts, for property.
Career palace. Administration, management, finance, logistics, public service, and any role whose function is to keep an organisation working. The texts read it for steady advancement rather than sudden prominence.
Spouse palace. A steady, capable partner and a marriage that is well managed — the classical reading is comfort and reliability, with the corresponding note that the relationship may lack passion.
Property palace. Tianfu is one of the classical stars of real estate and of the family estate, and this is the palace where the star's conserving character is read most literally.
Health palace. Traditionally the spleen and stomach, and by extension the complaints of a settled life: digestion, weight, and the conditions that follow long comfort.
In the Parents palace the star reads as a supportive family and an inherited position; in Friends as a wide, dependable circle and the person others come to for help; in Children as children who are steady and capable.
With other stars
Tianfu is read first for its position relative to Ziwei, since the reflection rule means the two always sit in a fixed relation, and then for its own palace.
- Tianfu and Ziwei — emperor and treasury, the classical 君臣 pairing: authority with resources to back it. Read as the most stable combination in the system.
- Tianfu and Wuqu — treasury and treasurer: the classical pairing for wealth accumulated and managed well.
- Tianfu and Lianzhen — discipline with a steady hand behind it: principle that is administered rather than fought over.
- Tianfu and Tianxiang — administrator and minister: governance, consensus and institutional work.
- Tianfu and Qisha — the treasury always stands opposite the blade. The pairing is structural, and the tradition reads it as a chart holding stability on one side and force on the other, with the reading turning on which of the two is better supported by the supporting stars.
Among the lesser stars, 祿存 Lucun and Tianfu together are the classical pairing for stored wealth, and 左輔 Zuofu and 右弼 Youbi beside Tianfu are read as capable staff. The 煞 stars on Tianfu are read as pressure on the store — the texts note that the treasury under attack is a chart where resources are lost through conflict with others.
Transformations
In the common reckoning Tianfu does not carry 化祿, 化權 or 化忌, and 化科 is disputed: the 庚 Gēng stem is the classical case, where some lines place the Transformation of Fame on Tianfu, others on Taiyin and others on Tiantong. This knowledge base prints the common reckoning, which assigns 庚's 化科 to Taiyin, and flags the disagreement rather than resolving it — the difference is one of lineage, and a reading should say which line it follows. The practical effect is that Tianfu is governed mostly by its palace, its branch and the supporting stars rather than by the transformations, which contributes to its reputation for steadiness.
Is Tianfu a wealth star like Wuqu?
They are different offices. Wuqu earns and manages money actively; Tianfu holds and preserves. The tradition reads Wuqu as the treasurer and Tianfu as the treasury, and treats them as complements — one of the reasons the two are read so closely together.
Why does Tianfu not take 化忌?
In the common table of the Four Transformations no stem assigns the Transformation of Obstruction to Tianfu. The tradition reads that as part of the star's character rather than as an accident: a treasury is not where friction attaches. Individual lineages vary on certain stems, and the 庚 case is the one usually named.
What does it mean if Tianfu is in my Life palace?
A dependable, managerial disposition, and probably a life organised around keeping things running. The classical caution is about conservatism — the star is slow to venture, and a chart read only for its Tianfu can miss what else is present.
