Tanlang (貪狼) — The Star of Desire and Talent
貪狼 Tanlang, the "greedy wolf", is the ninth of the fourteen major stars and the first of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars in the classical ordering. It is summarised as 化氣為桃花 — "its transforming quality is the peach blossom", the star of attraction, appetite and desire. It stands opposite Ziwei in every chart, and the tradition reads that geometry as a statement in itself: dignity on one side of the ring, hunger on the other.
The character of the star
Tanlang leads with want. The star is read as appetite in the broadest sense — for pleasure, for company, for beauty, for money, for experience, for more. A person with the star prominent is described as charming, sociable, versatile and magnetic: someone who wants things openly, and whom others find compelling precisely because of it. It is one of the classical 桃花 stars alongside Lianzhen, and its literature is the most frankly sensual in the system.
The same reading produces the tradition's warnings. Appetite without limit becomes excess, and Tanlang is read for indulgence, for scattered effort, for the pursuit of novelty that leaves nothing finished. The counterweight in the classical texts is that the star is genuinely talented: it is associated with the arts, with performance, with the crafts, with languages and with anything that requires taste and a willingness to practise. Practitioners therefore read Tanlang as one of the most gifted and one of the least disciplined stars, and the reading usually turns on what channels it. Its key transformation — 化祿 Wealth under the stem 戊 Wù — is the classical case: appetite given a productive direction, which the texts read as the star at its best.
Element, polarity and place
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Element and polarity | 甲木 Yang Wood (some lines give 癸水 Wood-and-Water) |
| Group | Tianfu group — first of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars |
| Classical quality | 化氣為桃花, the peach blossom / desire |
| Function in the chart | Appetite and talent: attraction, versatility, sociability, and the drive to want more |
Lines differ on the star's element, and the difference is not cosmetic: the common reckoning gives Tanlang 甲木 Yang Wood, the growing tree with its appetite for light, while other lineages read a Water register in the star that suits its association with desire and with the arts. This knowledge base prints the common reckoning and flags the variation. Tanlang is read well in the wood and water branches that support a growing, flowing quality, and is read as more strained where fire consumes it.
In the palaces
Life palace. A charming, versatile, socially gifted character with strong appetites and a talent for enjoyment. Read with discipline nearby, it is magnetism and range; read without, it is a person who starts much and finishes little.
Wealth palace. Money that comes in from many directions — entertainment, sales, arts, food, travel, transactions with people — and money that goes out as readily as it arrives. The classical note is that Tanlang's earning is real and its retention is the problem.
Career palace. Performing, arts, entertainment, hospitality, sales, and any work that runs on charm and range rather than on process. The star favours a career with variety and penalises routine.
Spouse palace. The placement the star's literature discusses most. Tanlang in the Spouse palace is read for strong attraction, for a partner with presence and appetite, and — in the classical register — for romantic complication, jealousy and second attachments. It is one of the combinations practitioners treat as requiring care.
Health palace. Traditionally the liver and, in the older texts, the reproductive functions: the classical association of appetite with the organs of desire and of excess.
In the Friends palace Tanlang reads as a wide, lively, useful circle; in Fortune palace — inner life — as a strong appetite for enjoyment, which the texts read as either pleasure or restlessness depending on the rest of the chart; in Travel it reads as good fortune abroad and a life with movement in it.
With other stars
- Tanlang and Ziwei — the wolf and the emperor, always opposite. The reading is about which side of the chart dominates: dignity governing appetite, or appetite testing dignity.
- Tanlang and Lianzhen — the two 桃花 stars together: the strongest romantic and artistic combination in the system, and the one the classical texts elaborate most.
- Tanlang and Wuqu — appetite joined to finance: the classical pairing for business, for money made from desire, and for the chart that earns quickly and spends as quickly.
- Tanlang and Tianji — the wolf with the strategist: appetite given a plan, which the texts read as the star at its most effective.
- Tanlang and Pojun — appetite with the breaker, part of the 殺破狼 triad discussed below.
Tanlang is one of the three stars of the 殺破狼 triad, with Qisha and Pojun. The three always occupy three palaces a third of the way apart, and the tradition reads the triad as the chart's engine of change — a life of movement, disruption and reinvention rather than continuity. The complementary triad is 機月同梁, the four stars Tianji, Taiyin, Tiantong and Tianliang, read for stability and steady course.
Transformations
In the common reckoning Tanlang carries 化祿 Wealth under 戊 Wù, 化權 Power under 己 Jǐ, and 化忌 Obstruction under 癸 Guǐ. The first is the star's most discussed placement: 貪狼化祿 is read as the appetite finding a productive channel, and it is one of the classical references for success built on talent and desire rather than on discipline. 化權 on the star is read as appetite given command — ambition that now organises rather than scatters. 化忌 is the inversion: desire turned to frustration, and a classical reference for want that cannot be satisfied or for the complications the star already carries in the Spouse palace.
Is Tanlang only about romance?
No, though the 桃花 reputation is real. The star is read for appetite of every kind and for the talent that comes with it — arts, performance, sales, sociability and range. Romance is one register of the same character, and the Spouse palace is where it is read.
What is 殺破狼 and why does Tanlang belong to it?
Does 貪狼化祿 mean good luck?
It is read as appetite given a productive outlet: the star's desire converted into earning and achievement. That is a favourable placement in the tradition's terms, and it is the reason practitioners look at the transformation before judging a Tanlang chart.
