Pojun (破軍) — The Star of Demolition and Renewal
破軍 Pojun, the "army breaker", is the fourteenth and last of the fourteen major stars and the seventh of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars. It closes the 北斗 sequence, and its Formula closes a thought too: 化氣為耗 — "its transforming quality is expenditure". Pojun is the star of demolition, upheaval and the large change that clears the ground for something else. It is the third member of the 殺破狼 triad, and the most disruptive of the fourteen.
The character of the star
Pojun is read as the will to tear down. Where Qisha acts decisively within a structure, Pojun breaks the structure: the star is associated with rebellion, with restlessness, with the demolition of what exists and with the energy that goes into building something new in its place. A person with the star prominent is described as pioneering, unconventional, bold and hard to settle — someone who is most alive when something is being overturned, and who finds a steady state not merely boring but unbearable.
The formula 耗, expenditure, is the tradition's main warning. Pojun spends: money, positions, relationships, arrangements. Consuming and being consumed are the same act, and the classical literature reads the star for sudden losses, for reversals, for a life that has been through several selves. It is also read for the genuine pioneer — the star is the tradition's own reference for the person who goes first, founds the new venture, and moves before it settles. Pojun, unusually among the fourteen, is not merely the beginning of change but the whole arc of it: the star is read in the texts as passing from destruction through difficulty to renewal, and the reading turns on where in that arc the chart's holder is.
Element, polarity and place
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Element and polarity | 癸水 Yin Water (some lines give 甲木 Yin Wood) |
| Group | Tianfu group — seventh of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars |
| Classical quality | 化氣為耗, expenditure |
| Function in the chart | Demolition and renewal: upheaval, pioneering, large change, and the spending that funds it |
Lines differ on the star's element, and the difference is read as a difference of emphasis: the common 癸水 register gives Pojun the penetrating, dissolving quality of the 北斗's last star, while the alternative wood reading emphasises the growth that follows the clearing. This knowledge base prints the common reckoning and flags the variation. Pojun is read well where water supports it and is read as most violent in the branches where its force is least contained; like every major star, it is judged in its seat.
In the palaces
Life palace. A bold, restless, unconventional character with a talent for reinvention and an aversion to the settled state. The classical reading includes the toll: a life with several clear chapters, and the loss that each chapter costs.
Career palace. One of the star's strongest seats — founding, building, turning around, and work with a beginning and an end. The texts read it for careers that are created rather than entered, and for professional lives that restart more than once.
Wealth palace. The star's formula at its most literal: money that is spent as fast as it is earned, and income tied to change. The classical sources treat Pojun in the Wealth palace as one of the clearest warnings in the system, and also note that the star's ventures, when they work, are large.
Spouse palace. A turbulent reading — the classical literature is explicit that Pojun in the palace of partnership is associated with separation, upheaval and second unions. As with every such note, the palace's other stars and transformations qualify it; the tradition reports the tendency rather than a fixed outcome.
Health palace. Traditionally the kidneys and the reproductive functions, and the classical association of the star with depletion — the cost to the body of a life that spends itself.
In the Children palace Pojun reads as independent, unconventional children and often as a small number; in Friends as a circle that changes; in Property as a home that is moved from more than once. In the Travel palace it is read for large movement and relocation.
With other stars
- Pojun and Ziwei — authority and demolition: a chart in which the person is willing to break what stands in the way of their position. Read for decisive restructuring.
- Pojun and Wuqu — finance meeting the breaker: large movements of capital, and the classical pairing for ventures that break with what came before.
- Pojun and Lianzhen — conviction turned destructive, and one of the pairings the tradition reads for sharp reversals.
- Pojun and Tanlang — two of the three 殺破狼 stars, and a combination read for appetite joined to upheaval: the chart that wants and then overturns.
- Pojun and Tianxiang — the breaker with the seal, often opposite: administration on one side and demolition on the other, which the tradition reads as a chart that both builds and governs.
Pojun's place in the 殺破狼 triad — with Qisha and Tanlang — is the frame its reading is usually set in: the three stars fall three palaces apart, and the triad is the tradition's description of a life of movement and reinvention. Its counterpart is the steadier 機月同梁 group. Among the supporting stars, 左輔 Zuofu, 右弼 Youbi, 文昌 Wenchang and 文曲 Wenqu beside Pojun are read as giving the upheaval a purpose, and 火星 Huoxing and 鈴星 Lingxing as accelerating it.
Transformations
In the common reckoning Pojun carries 化祿 Wealth under 癸 Guǐ and 化權 Power under 甲 Jiǎ. The pairing is the star's reading in miniature. 破軍化祿 is the classical case of expenditure that produces something — the demolition funded, the venture that pays — and practitioners read it as the difference between a Pojun chart that renews and one that merely destroys. 化權 on the star is upheaval given command: the person who reorganises rather than resents. Note that two of the common table's stems place a transformation on Pojun and its partner in the same year — 甲 Jiǎ, for instance, puts 化權 on Pojun and 化祿 on Lianzhen.
Is Pojun the worst star of the fourteen?
It has the hardest reputation, because its formula is 耗 and its associations are upheaval and loss. The classical literature also reads it as the pioneer star — the one that clears ground — and treats the difficulty as the price of the renewal rather than as the whole reading.
What does 破軍化祿 change?
It supplies the outcome the star otherwise lacks. 破軍化祿 is read as expenditure that is recovered, and it is one of the placements practitioners look for when judging whether a Pojun chart's changes are productive or merely destructive.
What does Pojun in the Spouse palace mean?
The classical texts read it for separation and upheaval, and the tradition reports that reading plainly. It is a tendency the sources note, qualified by the palace's supporting stars and transformations, and it describes the character of the pairing rather than a fixed outcome.
