Lianzhen (廉貞) — The Star of Discipline and Contest
廉貞 Lianzhen is the sixth and last star of the Ziwei group, counted as the fifth of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars. It is the most difficult of the fourteen major stars to summarise in a sentence, and the tradition says so: the star is read both as the upright official and as the imprisoned one, both as decorum and as appetite. Its classical formula, 化氣為囚 — "its transforming quality is confinement" — gives the reason. Lianzhen is the star of the boundary: the rule that holds a person in, and the pressure that builds when the rule is felt.
The character of the star
The two readings are not a contradiction but a single quality seen from two sides. Lianzhen is read for propriety, discipline, principle and self-command — the official who keeps to the code — and equally for the person who is confined by that code and eventually tests it. The classical texts call it a star of 廉 (integrity) and 貞 (chastity, firmness), and pair the epithet with their most pointed observations about romance and appetite: Lianzhen is one of the two stars the tradition names as 桃花, the peach-blossom stars of attraction, the other being Tanlang.
Practically, the star is read for a person of strong convictions and a strong temper, who lives by a rule and is uncomfortable when others do not. It is a star of officials, inspectors, judges, soldiers and anyone whose work is to hold a line. Its difficulties are the difficulties of the boundary — rigidity, conflict with authority, and a private life that does not match the public standard. The tradition is honest that a Lianzhen reading often comes down to how the person handles the tension between what they enforce and what they want.

Yin Fire is the lamp and the candle rather than the sun — a contained, intense, deliberate flame, which suits a star of discipline better than Yang Fire would. The classical sources read Lianzhen best in fire branches and in the earth branches that receive it, and read it under strain where the water branches damp it. As with every star the judgement is made in its seat, not in the abstract.
In the palaces
Life palace. A principled, intense, self-contained character with a strong sense of right and a low tolerance for compromise. Read well, it is integrity; read with strain, it is a person at odds with their circumstances and inclined to fight the rule they cannot leave.
Career palace. One of the star's strongest seats: officialdom, the law, inspection, the military and police, management with authority over others, and any work that consists in keeping a standard. The texts also place it in the arts, where discipline and appetite meet.
Wealth palace. Money earned by contest — competition, negotiation, jobs with conflict built in — and the classical pairing for income that comes with aggravation. Where Lianzhen takes 化祿 the texts read money made from a competitive edge.
Spouse palace. The placement the tradition discusses most, and the most complicated in the star's literature. Lianzhen in the Spouse palace is read for a strong-willed partner, for a relationship that has to be worked out rather than enjoyed, and — with its 桃花 reputation — for romantic entanglement and jealousy. The classical sources give it specific names and specific cautions.
Health palace. Traditionally the heart and the blood, and the complaints the tradition associates with fire and with strain: circulation, inflammation, and the effects of holding tension.
In the Friends palace the star reads as a circle of forceful people and frequent friction with colleagues; in Siblings as competitive relations among equals; in Children as firm discipline between generations. In the Travel palace it is read for the person who is more effective away from home than in it.
With other stars
- Lianzhen and Tianfu — discipline joined to steadiness, and one of the classical pairings for a well-governed life: principle held by a person who does not need to fight about it.
- Lianzhen and Tanlang — the two 桃花 stars together. The most discussed combination in the star's literature: strong attraction, strong appetite, and a chart the texts read for romantic complication and for a talent for the arts.
- Lianzhen and Qisha — principle met with force: the classical pairing for conflict, decisiveness under pressure, and a career in contest.
- Lianzhen and Pojun — the boundary and the breaker: conviction that turns destructive, and one of the pairings the tradition reads for a life of sharp reversals.
- Lianzhen and Tianxiang — the official with the minister: a much calmer reading, in which discipline becomes administration.
The 六吉 stars soften the star considerably — 左輔 and 右弼 beside it are read as allies in a contest, and 文昌 and 文曲 as the literate form of the same discipline. Among the 六煞, 火星 Huoxing and 鈴星 Lingxing on Lianzhen are the classical pairing for a temper that decides things suddenly.
Transformations
In the common reckoning Lianzhen carries 化祿 Wealth under 甲 Jiǎ and 化忌 Obstruction under 丙 Bǐng. Both are used heavily by practitioners. 化祿 on Lianzhen is the classical reading of income from a competitive or official position, and the transformation is one of the reasons the star is treated as auspicious in the Wealth palace despite its reputation elsewhere. 化忌 on Lianzhen is the sharper of the two and the one the texts elaborate at length: principle turned to obstruction, a person caught by the rule they enforce, and the standard reference for legal, contractual or romantic difficulty in a chart.
Is Lianzhen a good star or a bad star?
The tradition declines the question, and the star is the standard example of why. It is read as integrity, discipline and public service in one register and as confinement, contest and appetite in another. Which applies depends on the palace, the supporting stars and the transformations, not on the star by itself.
Why is Lianzhen called a peach-blossom star?
Because the classical literature pairs propriety with appetite: a star of strict boundaries is also a star where the boundary is felt and tested. Lianzhen and Tanlang are the two stars the tradition names as 桃花, and Lianzhen's reputation in the Spouse palace follows from that.
What does 化忌 on Lianzhen mean?
The Transformation of Obstruction on a star of rules is read as rules turning against the person holding them — disputes, contracts, official difficulty, and the romantic complications the star is already known for. It is a placement practitioners treat as a live issue in the chart rather than as background.
