Jumen (巨門) — The Star of Speech and Analysis

巨門 Jumen, the "great gate", is the tenth of the fourteen major stars and the second of the 北斗 Northern Dipper stars. It is summarised as 化氣為暗 — "its transforming quality is darkness" — and the darkness is the darkness of the unexplored: the gate is where something has to be brought out into the light and examined. Jumen is the star of the spoken and written word, of analysis, of inquiry and, at its sharpest, of the argument that follows from looking too closely.

The character of the star

Jumen is read as the mind that talks. Its holder is described as incisive, articulate and persistent — someone who asks the question others avoid, who works by discussion, and whose natural instrument is language. The classical literature places the star with teachers, analysts, lawyers, writers, broadcasters and researchers: professions in which the talent is to open a subject up and say what is inside it. It is also the star of study, and the tradition reads it for depth of knowledge rather than breadth.

The cost is the one the name implies. A gate opens both ways, and the star that brings things into the light is read for exposure, for gossip, for misunderstanding, and for conflict caused by speech. The 暗 of its formula is not moral darkness but the uncomfortable fact that what is examined may not be pleasant — Jumen is read for the blunt truth, for quarrels, and for the reputation of being hard to live with. Its strength is that it is rarely wrong about what it sees; its difficulty is the manner of saying so.

Yin Water is the penetrating kind — the rain that gets into everything — and the classical sources read Jumen's character from it: subtle, searching, and impossible to keep out. The star is read well in the water and metal branches that support it, and is read as more exposed in the fire branches where Yin Water is weaker. As with all the major stars the judgement is made in the seat it takes.

In the palaces

Life palace. An analytical, verbal, persistent character who works through discussion and inquiry. Read positively, it is the sharp intelligence of a teacher or researcher; read with strain, it is a person whose honesty makes enemies.

Career palace. Teaching, law, journalism, analysis, research, broadcasting, sales through argument — work whose instrument is the word. The classical texts also place it in medicine and in the technical fields, where the talent for finding what is wrong serves the same purpose.

Wealth palace. Money earned by the word: fees, teaching, consultation, negotiation, writing. The classical note is that Jumen's income requires explanation and that disputes over money are characteristic of the placement.

Spouse palace. One of the placements the classical literature treats with most caution, because the star of speech in the palace of intimacy is read as quarrels — a relationship worked out through argument, and a partner who speaks plainly. The texts give it specific warnings and equally specific possibilities, since the same talent can make a marriage acute and honest.

Health palace. Traditionally the throat, the mouth and the digestive tract, and the classical association of the star with complaint: throat, teeth and stomach troubles are among the readings.

In the Siblings palace Jumen reads as frank and argumentative relations among equals; in Friends as criticism and friction within a circle; in Parents as distance created by honesty. In the Travel palace it is read for the person who is well received away from home and misunderstood in it.

With other stars

  • Jumen and Tianji — the classical pairing of 機巨: analysis joined to strategy. Read for a person who both sees the problem and can explain it, and the standard combination for a career in advice.
  • Jumen and Taiyang — light on the word: publicity, teaching, public argument. Where Taiyang is bright the combination is read for fame through speech; where it is dim, for quarrels that become public.
  • Jumen and Tiantong — the 同巨 pairing, ease against speech. Read as comfort and criticism pulling at each other, and in the Spouse palace as the classical tension between a soft nature and a plain one.
  • Jumen and Tianliang — the word with the elder behind it: teaching with authority, and one of the calmer readings of a difficult star.

Among the supporting stars, 文昌 Wenchang and 文曲 Wenqu are read as the literate form of Jumen's talent and greatly improve it; 火星 Huoxing and 鈴星 Lingxing on Jumen are the classical pairing for a temper in the speech, and 擎羊 Qingyang and 陀羅 Tuoluo for words used as weapons. 左輔 and 右弼 beside the star are read as allies in argument rather than opponents.

Transformations

In the common reckoning Jumen carries 化祿 Wealth under 辛 Xīn, 化權 Power under 癸 Guǐ, and 化忌 Obstruction under 丁 Dīng. The last is the placement the tradition watches most: 巨門化忌 is the classical reference for trouble through speech — slander, misunderstanding, litigation, and the harm done by words that were true and badly said. Where Jumen takes 化祿, the same instrument is read as productive: income and standing earned by speaking and teaching well. 化權 on the star is read as the word given authority, which the classical sources treat as a strong placement for a teacher or adviser.

Is Jumen an unlucky star?

It is one of the stars the tradition treats with reserve, and its formula 化氣為暗 is not flattering at first reading. In practice it is read as a star of real intelligence and of difficult consequences: the talent is genuine, and the trouble comes from how plainly it is used.

What does 巨門化忌 actually mean?

The Transformation of Obstruction on the star of speech: trouble caused by words, whether as slander, misunderstanding, dispute or litigation. It is one of the classical references the tradition uses when it speaks of a life with argument in it, and practitioners read it closely alongside the palace it falls in.

Why is Jumen associated with the Spouse palace?

Because the star's instrument is speech and the Spouse palace is the seat of intimacy, which makes talking — and disagreeing — the natural expression of the combination. The tradition reads the placement as a marriage worked out in conversation, with the classical warnings that come with plain speaking.
