The Four Transformations (四化) in Zi Wei Dou Shu
The stars of a Purple Star chart describe what stands where. The Four Transformations (四化, sìhuà) describe what happens to it. They are four modifiers, assigned to particular stars according to the Heavenly Stem of the birth year, and practically every school treats them as the layer that turns a static chart into a reading with weight and direction. Where the fourteen major stars are the chart's vocabulary, the Four Transformations are its verbs.
What the four are
Each transformation is a quality that attaches to one star in the chart, and by extension to the palace that star occupies.
- 化祿 (huà lù), Transformation of Wealth — fortune, ease of gain, resources, and what the palace receives without struggle.
- 化權 (huà quán), Transformation of Power — authority, control, drive, and where the palace exerts itself.
- 化科 (huà kē), Transformation of Fame — recognition, reputation, learning, and where the palace is seen favourably.
- 化忌 (huà jì), Transformation of Obstruction — difficulty, attachment, loss or debt, and where the palace meets friction.
Because the four are attached to stars, and stars sit in palaces, a transformation is read at the meeting point of the two. A Wealth transformation on a star in the Career palace is read as income through work; the same transformation on a star in the Spouse palace is read differently, through partnership. The transformation does not say "money" on its own — it says "flow" in whatever sphere the star occupies.
The assignment by year stem
For a birth-year stem there is one transformation of each kind, attached to four stars. The table below gives the common reckoning.
Obstruction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Taiyang |
Taiyin |
Lianzhen |
Jumen |
Tianji |
Wenqu |
Tiantong |
Wenchang |
Wuqu |
Tanlang |
Note that two of the transformations can fall on supporting stars rather than on major ones — 文昌, 文曲, 左輔 and 右弼 appear in the table — which is part of why the lesser stars matter. The corresponding Heavenly Stems and their elements are set out in the ten stems.
Where the schools differ
The table above is the common reckoning, and it is not the only one. The most frequently disputed stem is 庚 Gēng, where some lines place 化科 on 太陰 Taiyin, others on 天府 Tianfu, and others again on 天同 Tiantong; smaller variations are recorded for 戊 Wù and 壬 Rén as well. The difference is not a mistake but a difference of lineage, and the honest practice is to say which line a reading follows rather than to present one table as universal. This knowledge base prints the common reckoning and flags the stem, in keeping with the rule that a school's disagreement is reported rather than hidden.
How the four are read together
化忌 first. Most practitioners locate the Transformation of Obstruction before anything else, because it marks the palace that will demand attention: the area of attachment, debt or recurring difficulty. Its palace is read as the chart's pressure point.
Then 化祿. The Wealth transformation marks where energy flows easily — the palace of relative ease and gain. Read with 化忌 it often describes a trade: what supports one area and strains another.
Then 化權 and 化科. Power marks where control is exercised and Fame where recognition arrives. A palace carrying both is read as one where a person is both effective and seen.
Because the transformations are tied to a stem, they move with time as well as with birth. The birth-year stem gives the chart's own transformations, and the stem of the current year gives the annual transformations (流年四化) laid over it — a second set of four that shifts every year and is read alongside the ten-year and annual periods.
Are the Four Transformations more important than the major stars?
Most schools weight them at least as heavily, and the Flying Star school builds its method around them. A major star without transformations is a general statement; the transformations say where the chart actually moves.
What does a transformation on a minor star mean?
That a supporting star — Wenchang, Wenqu, Zuofu, Youbi, for instance — carries the quality into its palace. It is read in the same way as a transformation on a major star, with the qualifier that the minor star's own meaning is added to it.
Can the same star carry two transformations?
Yes. In several stems the same star takes more than one of the four, and the combination is read as a compound rather than as two separate notes. The chart, not the single line of the table, is where those compounds are judged.
Do the annual transformations change my birth chart?
They do not move the stars, but they add a layer of four points of emphasis read over the birth chart for a given year. The natal Four Transformations stay fixed for life; the annual ones change with the year's stem.
