STEP 1

Sum the year digitsAdd all digits of birth year to a single digit. 1974 → 1+9+7+4 = 21 → 2+1 = 3

STEP 2

Apply gender formulaMale: 10 − digit = Kua. Female: digit + 5 = Kua (subtract 9 if over 9). If result is 5: males use Kua 2, females use Kua 8. Uses Solar calendar — year starts ~Feb 4.

EXAMPLE

Male born 1974digit = 3 → 10 − 3 = 7. Female born 1986: 1+9+8+6=24→6, 6+5=11→2. Female born 1976: digit=5 → Kua 8. Male born 1969: 1+9+6+9=25→7, 10−7=3. Female born 1969: 25→7, 7+5=12→3. Hmm, try Female born 1974: digit=3, 3+5=8. Result: Kua 8.
