These four annual energies are not sectors you optimize — they are sectors you avoid activating. Construction noise, drilling, renovation, and even heavy furniture movement in these zones can trigger severe consequences: illness, accidents, lawsuits, financial collapse.
Their positions shift every year according to the Chinese solar calendar. A bedroom that was safe last year can host the Five Yellow this year. A wall you planned to knock down in March might sit directly in the path of Tai Sui. This is why checking the annual afflictions is the first step of any Feng Shui assessment — before anything else is analyzed.
The Grand Duke Jupiter
(Tai Sui - 太歲)
The Grand Duke must be appeased, not confronted
Tai Sui — the Grand Duke Jupiter — is the presiding deity of the year, positioned in the direction corresponding to the reigning Earthly Branch. Unlike the Five Yellow, Tai Sui is not inherently destructive. The danger lies in confronting or disturbing it.
Facing Tai Sui (sitting with your back to it) is actually considered auspicious — you have his support behind you. The problem is facing directly toward Tai Sui, or renovating in his sector. This is called "offending the Grand Duke" (犯太歲), and it is one of the most serious mistakes in classical Feng Shui.
Historical source:One of the oldest concepts in Chinese metaphysics. The 60 Tai Sui generals, each governing a year in the 60-year Jiazi cycle, appear in texts from the Tang Dynasty. The system integrates celestial mechanics (Jupiter's cycle) with terrestrial energy mapping.
The Five Yellow
(Wu Wang - 五黃)
The direction that breaks the year
Wu Huang is the visiting annual Star 5 — the Earth star of calamity and misfortune. In Flying Stars numerology, Star 5 has no element affinity of its own; it is pure destructive Earth energy. When it visits a sector, that sector becomes highly volatile.
Unlike the other afflictions, the Five Yellow brings compounded effects: illness, financial disasters, accidents, and the potential to amplify any existing negative energy in the same sector. Its location changes every year as the annual Flying Stars rotate.
Historical source:Derived from the annual Flying Stars system (Xuan Kong Fei Xing), formalized during the Qing Dynasty and rooted in the Lo Shu magic square. Star 5 occupies the center of the Lo Shu — its annual movement to outer sectors carries that central, uncontrollable energy into living space.
The Year Breaker
(Sui Po - 歲破)
The direction that breaks the year
Sui Po always occupies the direction directly opposite Tai Sui — 180 degrees away. While Tai Sui is the seat of the Grand Duke Jupiter, Sui Po is the zone that opposes and destabilizes that authority. Activating it creates the energetic equivalent of standing face-to-face against a supreme force.
The name translates literally as "Year Breaker" — it breaks the energy of everything under its influence for the year. Renovation, loud activities, or sleeping with your head pointing toward Sui Po is considered particularly harmful to health and vitality.
Historical source: Rooted in the 12-year cycle of Jupiter (Tai Sui), documented in classical texts since the Han Dynasty. Sui Po is derived directly from the earthly branch of the current year — its position is astronomically tied to Jupiter's orbital cycle, not the Flying Stars rotation.
The Three Killings
(San Sha - 三煞)
Three simultaneous threats across a 90° arc
The Three Killings (San Sha) differs from the other afflictions in one key way: it occupies a full 90-degree sector, not a single directional point. It brings three simultaneous calamities — loss of wealth, loss of health, and loss of reputation — when its sector is disturbed.
There is a unique rule about Three Killings: you must face it, never turn your back to it. This is the opposite of Tai Sui. Turning away from Three Killings is considered even more dangerous than facing it — it means you cannot see the threat approaching from behind.
Historical source: Derived from the system of Three Harmonies (San He) and Earthly Branches, codified in classical texts including the "Di Li Bian Zheng" (地理辨正). The three killings are computed from the cardinal direction occupied by the reigning year's elemental group — Water, Wood, Fire, or Metal years each trigger a specific 90° sector.

When afflictions overlap
In certain years, two afflictions can fall in adjacent or overlapping sectors — for example, the Five Yellow and Three Killings both affecting the West. This dramatically amplifies risk. Baguame flags overlapping zones as critical and displays them as combined warnings on the floor plan overlay.

Every year at Li Chun — the Start of Spring, around February 4th. This is not January 1st. If you plan a renovation in January, you are still operating under the previous year's map. Baguame uses the exact Li Chun date for every year automatically.
In classical practice, the consequences depend on the severity of the disturbance and which affliction was activated. Minor disturbances — moving furniture, light cleaning — are generally low risk. Major disturbances — drilling, renovation, groundbreaking — carry the highest risk. If work has already begun, traditional remedies can be applied to reduce the impact.
Living there is not the problem — disturbing it is. You can use the room normally as long as you avoid renovation, loud noise, and heavy furniture movement in that sector during the year. Placing metal remedies in the space reduces the risk further.

The main door is one of the most sensitive points in the home. If it faces the Five Yellow, avoid renovation of the entrance area and place a six-rod hollow metal wind chime near the door.
